I specialize in writing, communicating, and marketing science. Not everyone finds themselves at the crossroads of science and communication — but it’s right where I feel at home. I am a scientist. I am a creative.

My journey to study not just science writing but also science communication theory has taken me from Texas to the Midwest, where I’m taking it one polar vortex at a time. I am currently a master’s student in the Department of Life Sciences Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating in May 2016. I am also a freelance science writer. I have a strong interest in science writing, communication, and marketing but also a passion for science communication research and theory that deals with public perceptions of scientific issues.

I think a lot about what happens after I hit “publish.” Who is reading my stories? How are people interpreting them? Is it changing their perceptions about science? How can I measure those changes? These questions are what drew me to my current department. I am the department chair’s research assistant, serving in the role of department communication specialist. I handle the department’s social media, write web stories and press releases, and practice strategic communication, and alumni/donor relations, among many other duties.

In May 2014, I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin armed with one degree in biology and another in journalism. While at UT I held a science writing/communication internship in the Office of Communication at the College of Natural Sciences and served as social media coordinator at UT’s Energy Institute, along with other endeavors you can find on my resume.
